Biography

Award-winning artist Evan Stuart Marshall was born in Boston and raised in Sharon, Massachusetts. He has lived in New Jersey for more than 30 years. His work is inspired by the interplay of light and vibrant color, and he expresses himself through both landscape and abstract painting. His artwork has been featured in many exhibitions.

Though he is largely self-taught over his career, he has studied under Gerry Heydt at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, and Mary Giammarino at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum. His paintings have been featured in numerous group exhibitions. In 2017, he was honored with the Mary Koether Merit Award by the West Essex (NJ) Art Association. His work is held in many private collections and was selected by the new MC Hotel in Montclair, NJ, to be part of its permanent collection. Evan lives and works in Roseland, New Jersey.

Statement

I believe one of the purposes of art is to take us to places that make us happy. A landscape can bring us back to a place we loved, allowing us to relive a cherished experience; or it can take us to a place we love to imagine traveling to. An abstract painting evokes certain feelings and emotions, depending on its colors, design and composition. We carefully select abstracts for the way they affect us. By hanging this art in a room, we can evoke a specific mood and atmosphere. My goal is to create art that has this transporting effect on the people who view, and thereby adds something good to their lives.
